Dear Friends (2007)
This movie was adapted from Japanese manga story entitled ‘Dear Friends’ written by Yoshi and artwork by Watanabe Ayu.
‘Dear Friends’ tells about a girl named Rina (Keiko Kitagawa), a high school student who does not believe in the meaning of friendship. Rina spends her youth in vain; she spends her day just for clubbing, disobedient, arrogant, and hangs out all day long.
With her beauty and sex appeal, it’s not difficult for her to attract men’s attention; the presence of friends is only needed when she wants to take advantage of them, even Rina doesn’t feel guilty when she’s caught sleeping with her best friend’s lover. Because of her behavior, Rina can’t make a good friendship with her friends at school, and even she doesn’t have harmonious relationship with her parents at home.
Rina’s life changes drastically when she is diagnosed suffering from cancer and has to be hospitalized. When Rina is hospitalized, there’s only one person who always visits her, she is Maki (Motokariya), her school friend, but Rina doesn’t realize if she has ever met Maki before.
Along with the time this arrogant girl feels frustrated because of her illness; her beauty begins to fade away and turns to be pale face. In desperation, finally Rina decides to end her life by jumping from the hospital’s roof. At that crucial moment, Maki suddenly comes and tries to stop Rina’s intention; she even hurts herself to show that she is suffering the same feeling as Rina.
Seeing what Maki did, Rina starts to realize that she could build a true friendship with Maki. But when Rina begins to accept Maki as her best friend, without any reason that girl suddenly disappears. Who is Maki? Why is she willing to sacrifice herself for Rina although Rina never knew her before? This movie was able to translate the meaning of friendship, something important, but often considered as trivial matter.
