Little Children (2006)

February 22nd, 2010

A nice and friendly housing could be felt like a hell for some of the residents, although the residents seem happy and peaceful, but unfortunately it doesn’t reflect their true feelings. In that housing, there are some people who feel depressed and unhappy, and finally they try to find their happiness in extreme ways.

This movie tells about Brad Adamson (Patrick Wilson) and Sarah Pierce (Kate Winslet) who feel bored and unhappy with their couple and marriages. Sarah feels bored with her daily activities of caring for children and also facing some mothers who like to gossip. Meanwhile, Brad feels failed as a husband because he can’t pass the attorney test and his wife has bigger income than him. Apparently these two persons feel the attraction and lust after they met at a park, and then the affair begins.

This affair certainly hurt Kathy (Jennifer Connelly); Brad’s wife, and Richard (Gregg Edelman); Sarah’s husband, including their children. Of course, the adultery is wrong, even though it’s done for the reason of finding ‘happiness’.

The story of this movie becomes more interesting with the presence of a convict who had ever been arrested for pedophilia case, Ronnie McGorvey (Jackie Earle Haley). After Ronnie was released, the residents of that housing feel frightened and try to protect their children. The situation becomes more complicated because Larry Hedges (Noah Emmerich), a former cop, feels suspicious toward Ronnie who acts weird.

Some tragic incidents begin to happen, and all of them are related each other. Finally that incidents make Sarah realizes about the meaning of happiness and what the most important thing in her life is.

Kate Winslet played very well in this movie, she was able to portray a mother who was depressed and tried to get out from boredom, even she didn’t hesitate to do hot scene with Patrick Wilson. But unfortunately, although she has played total, there was no Oscar obtained by this movie.

Marry Ann: Oh that’s nice. So now cheating on your husband makes you a feminist?
Sarah Pierce: No, no, no. It’s not the cheating. It’s the hunger – The hunger for an alternative and the refusal to accept a life of unhappiness.

Italianetz (2005)

February 12th, 2010

At any country there are orphans waiting for adoption, living in a rundown orphanage, manipulated by adults, and try to find their identity. Using Neo-realist approach, where the movie was simple but touching, Andrei Kravchuk showed Russia landscape at the cold winter, a shabby orphanage, slum housing, and plain clothes.

Vanya (Kolya Spiridonov) is a six years-old child who lives in a shabby orphanage where the older residents have bleak job. However this time Vanya gets a little ‘luck’, he will be adopted by parents from Italy. In this ‘transaction’, the liaison, Madam (Mariya Kuznetsova), and the headmaster of the orphanage will get big commission.

But when a woman who had ever left her son in this orphanage comes looking for her son (her child was Vanya’s friend who has been adopted by other family), Vanya has a desire to find his mother, he is afraid if he goes to Italy, his mother won’t be able to meet him.

With the help of another kid from the orphanage, Vanya steals documents from the headmaster’s office and then runs away to a big city to find his mother based on information in that documents. Vanya starts his adventure to find his mother; he should avoid the pursuit of madam who’s angry because if Vanya is missing, then her commission will also disappear. Besides that, Vanya has to struggle against the tough-live of big city, he should face the street kids who try to hurt him, and the worse Vanya doesn’t know the address where his mother lives, he’s only following his instinct that’s sure if his mother is still alive.

This movie wanted to criticize the adults who take advantage of adoption process of children from the orphanage. This movie also wanted to remind the children who live in a warm family to be grateful because there are many children who are not as fortunate as they are.

Kolya Spiridonov played as Vanya very well and natural, he has an amazing acting talent. This movie won the ‘Deutsches Kinderhilfswerk Grand Prix’ and ‘Glass Bear for Best Feature Film’ in the Berlin International Film Festival at 2005. Andrei Kravchuk won the CIFEJ Prize in Carrousel International du Film in Montreal.
